The Wonder of the Magi: What the Wise Men Teach Us About Seeking Christ

Hello, Praying Friend!

A Christmas reflection on following God’s light, even when it leads us somewhere unexpected.

Each year around this time, I find myself returning to the story of the Magi.

Maybe it’s because the word magic traces back to that ancient word, and as a professional magician for more than thirty years, I’ve always felt a quiet sense of kinship with these Wonder-seekers of old.

They were men who spent their lives searching…
for meaning…
for signs…
for hints that the world was wider and more wondrous than people often imagined.

I can certainly relate.

And then one night, something new appeared in the sky.
A sign that reached back hundreds of years to an ancient prophecy.
A star so brilliant, so unexpected, that it must have stolen their breath for a moment.
It didn’t behave the way stars normally behave.
It didn’t simply shine, it summoned.

And these seekers answered.

Their journey wasn’t easy, even for wealthy men of means.
It would have taken weeks, perhaps months, of travel across rugged terrain.
But you don’t set out across the desert unless you’re convinced something extraordinary waits on the other side.

The Magi assumed that “something” would be found in a palace.

Where else would you look for a newborn King?

So they followed the star and journeyed straight to Jerusalem, perhaps expecting fanfare, trumpets, royal announcements.

Instead, they walked into confusion.
Herod’s paranoia hung thick in the air.
No one in the palace had seen the star.
No one knew anything about a child.
No one expected a King.

Still, the Magi continued.
The star pulled them past their own assumptions, past the noise of the city, past the places where power and prestige usually gather,
until they arrived at a small house in Bethlehem.

Nothing impressive.
Nothing royal.
Certainly nothing that looked like the fulfillment of a prophecy.

Just a young mother, her child, and a home that probably smelled like ordinary life: baking bread, warm straw, maybe a hint of smoke from a low fire.

But the wise have a way of recognizing truth the moment they walk into a room.
The Magi didn’t ask for credentials.
They didn’t question the surroundings.
They didn’t compare this small home to the palace they had just visited.
They simply bowed.

Because in that moment, they understood:
God had led them not to a throne, but to a Person.
Not to a place of power, but to a presence of peace.

Their gifts—gold, frankincense, and myrrh were not extravagant gestures meant to impress a child.
They were quiet declarations of who they believed Him to be:
a King,

God with us,
and a Savior whose story would one day take Him to a cross.

And I imagine they left that little home changed, not because the journey was over, but because the Wonder they found there would travel back with them.

What draws me to this story year after year is how upside-down it all is.
The palace had no idea a King had been born.
But the humble house welcomed Him.
The scholars in Jerusalem missed the signs.
But foreigners from the East followed the light.

And maybe that’s the part of the story that whispers to me even now:
God still shows up in unexpected places.

He still reveals Himself to those willing to look.
He still leads hearts by quiet light rather than loud announcement.
And if we let Him, He still surprises us with Wonder in the small, ordinary, unremarkable places we often overlook.

This Christmas, I hope that we become a little more like the Magi…
curious enough to seek..
humble enough to bow…
and open enough to recognize Christ even when He appears in places we never expected.

Because He is still worth the journey.

And He still invites us to follow.

With gratitude,
